Movie Review: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Rating: 3/5)

Image
This film is about an elite special force trying to stop a group of terrorists, who wants to control the world, by creating chaos using their advanced weaponry. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is inspired by Hasbro 's famous line of plastic action figures. The main story of the film is about an evil weapons-manufacturing company, who developed an advanced nano-technology, which can “eat up” everything built with metal (like tanks or even the Eiffel Tower ). The terrorists planned to hit the world’s major cities with this new weapon and to control the world as a result. The “Joes” (as what the soldiers of G.I. Joes called themselves) were fighting to stop their plan. Frankly, I was not expecting this film to have any kind of story, because everybody understands this kind of summer action movie is not there to win any Oscar Awards on best picture or best screenplay, it is there to give us (the viewers) all the actions and thrills. But to my surprise, it actually had a main plot and pro

Movie Review: 竊聽風雲 - Overheard (Rating: 4/5)

The story is about how three police intelligence officers got caught up in a stock insider-trading case. Initially, it was just about making money in the stock market illegally with insider information, but the situation quickly turns way out of hand, and the consequences were much more serious than any of them have expected. The movie is directed by 麥兆輝 (Alan Mak) and 莊文強 (Felix Chong). Alan was responsible for the script in 無間道 (Internal Affairs), so I was really expecting the script in this movie to be (at least) as great as Internal Affairs, and I wasn’t disappointed. The movie starts off with the three main characters, played by 劉青雲 (Lau Ching-wan), 古天樂 (Louis Koo), 吳彥祖 (Daniel Wu), setting up the “bugs” (electronic ear-dropping devices) in the suspect’s office. Although it wasn’t as cool (or exaggerated) as Tom Cruise breaking into the CIA database room in Mission Impossible , the script did a good job setting up the atmosphere, so you are already engaged in the first five minu

Movie Review: Revolutionary Road (Rating: 4/5)

Revolutionary Road is about how a couple figures out what they want to do in life. They argued, struggled, and then agreed. But when some life events occur (e.g.: a promotion) and plans don’t really work out as planned, then the couple goes through the whole argue-struggle-agree cycle again. It sounds boring but it isn’t (at least in the movie). I think the credits really go to the cast in the movie. Not only Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet did an excellent job in presenting the couple in the movie to be realistic, but also the supporting cast such as the real estate agent’s son (played by Michael Shannon ), who was considered to have mental problems by his parents, was terrific to watch, because he represents the real value of life (in modern sense) among all the other characters in the whole movie. Regarding to the two lead actor and actress, Kate Winslet was great as usual, although her performance in this movie was more explicit as she was in Reader . Her character changed fro
